The Santorini caldera, formed 3,600 years ago in one of history's most violent eruptions, remains Europe's only inhabited volcanic crater accessible by sea. The Minoan explosion ejected sixty cubic kilometres of magma, collapsing Thera into a basin now rimmed by 300-metre cliffs of layered pumice and ash.
